While directing Delhi-NCR authorities to move stray dogs to shelter homes, the Supreme Court also emphasised the value of adopting them. Adopting a stray dog also involves additional expenses for upkeep and care.
Street adoption is usually free. NGOs may charge Rs 500–2,000 for vaccinations, sterilisation, and initial care, while some may charge up to Rs 8,000 for full services.
Many NGOs don’t charge fees but request donations to support food, medical care, and shelters for homeless dogs.
Dogs require well-balanced meals: chicken at Rs 130-300/kg, fish at more than Rs 400/kg, rice at Rs 40/kg, oats at Rs 100-400/kg, fruits and vegetables at Rs 40-300/kg, and branded dog food for Rs 2,000+/10kg.
Dogs need vaccines to stay healthy. Approximate costs are: Rabies Rs 350–500, DHPP Rs 800–1,000, Parvo Rs 800–1,000, Leptospirosis Rs 150–200, Bordetella Rs 600–800, and Lyme Rs 700–900.
Grooming keeps dogs healthy and clean. Costs range from Rs 700 to more than Rs 2,000 that depends on the breed and size.
Adopting a dog requires both financial resources and a long-term commitment. You have two duties, towards society and the dog. The dog needs resources, time, care, and a secure home.
