If the PAN card is not cancelled, it remains valid even after the death of an individual. This can lead to fraudsters misusing the card.
Before one starts the process of cancellation, it is important to clear all the tax-related issues that the deceased person had.
For one to start the process of cancellation, it is important to have the copy of PAN card of the deceased person. With it there needs to be a death certificate also.
One also needs a letter that makes request for the cancellation of the card. With this, one needs copy of own PAN card, document that shows the relation with the deceased like Aadhaar card, etc.
One can also write a letter to the jurisdictional assessing officer of the income tax department for cancelling the PAN card. It should have attached all the required documents.
It is also important to find the right assessing officer. This one can be found using the "Know Your AO" facility on the income tax department's website.
Cancellation can also be opted by applying in Form 49A.
The final step for an individual after the request for cancellation is made is to wait for the documents to get verified; if all goes well, PAN is cancelled.
