A cheque is a written document that can be presented to a bank, directing it to disburse the specified amount, both in words and numbers, to the individual named on it.

RBI Clarification

In a post on X, PIB Fact Check rejected the claims that said RBI has given new regulations for ink on cheques, saying that the use of black ink is prohibited.

Inks that can be used in cheques

According to RBI guidelines, there is no specified color that can be used to write cheques, however, Customers must use image-friendly coloured ink to write cheques to facilitate a clear image of written information. 

Things to be careful while signing a cheque

According to the RBI FAQs three images are captured for each cheque in CTS – front Gray Scale, front Black and White, and back Black and White. Customers should note that cheques with alterations or modifications are not accepted under CTS.

Modifications in the cheque

Customers should use new cheque leaves for any modifications in the payee's name, the numerical amount, or the written amount. This measure aids banks in detecting and preventing fraudulent changes.
