The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched in 2014 has completed 12 years on August 28, 2026. The scheme was introduced to give access to basic banking services in the country and bring unbanked sections of the population into the formal financial system.

A PMJDY account is a basic savings bank account and does not require the account holder to maintain a minimum balance. The interest rate applicable to regular savings bank accounts is also applicable to PMJDY accounts. Eligible account holders can access an overdraft facility of up to Rs 10,000, subject to eligibility conditions. The facility can be availed after six months of satisfactory operation of the bank account.
PMJDY accounts can also be used to access Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and various social security schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana. The accounts are also linked to financial services such as MUDRA.
The RuPay debit card issued under PMJDY also provides accident insurance cover. The cover is Rs 1 lakh for eligible accounts and was enhanced to Rs 2 lakh for new PMJDY accounts opened after August 2018.
Who Can Open A PM Jan Dhan Account
Indian citizens can open a PMJDY account, with no upper age limit. An account can be opened at a bank branch or through a Business Correspondent, also known as a Bank Mitra. The applicants need to submit the required KYC documents and complete the account opening process. Joint accounts can also be opened under the scheme. The latest figures come as PMJDY completes 12 years, with the scheme continuing to provide access to formal banking and related financial services.
