UPI has made digital payments in India fast and widely used, with transactions completing within seconds. As usage continues to grow, even small errors while making a payment can sometimes result in money being sent to the wrong account, requiring users to know the available steps for reporting and resolution.

Once a UPI payment goes to the wrong account, it usually gets credited straight away to the other person’s bank account. The system doesn’t really have any way to take it back on its own, so it cannot be reversed automatically. That’s why users need to act fast and keep basic details like transaction ID, time and amount.

It is often assumed that money sent through UPI cannot be recovered if it goes to the wrong person. As the recovery is not guaranteed, taking quick action and following the proper reporting process can improve the chances of getting the funds back.

What You Should Do

You should start by taking a screenshot of the transaction details, so you have proof. Then open your UPI app, which one you use, and ensure you have the UPI ID, date, time, and exact amount ready.

If the money went to a valid UPI ID, you can try reaching out to the person directly to ask them for a refund. If there’s no response or they refuse, then raise a complaint directly from the app using the “Help” or “Report an Issue” option linked to that transaction.

If it still doesn’t get resolved, take it up with your bank. You can call customer care or even visit the branch. The bank can verify the transaction using the Unique Transaction Reference number.

If your bank or UPI app does not resolve the complaint within the standard turnaround time, you can take the issue further by going to the NPCI website. From there, users can open the UPI Dispute Redressal or complaint section and submit the details.

What Users Should Keep In Mind

Recovering money sent to a wrong but valid UPI ID usually depends on the recipient’s cooperation and may not always be successful. That’s why it is important to carefully verify the recipient’s name before authorising any payment with a UPI PIN. In cases where the UPI ID does not exist, the transaction generally fails, and the money is usually returned to the account within a few working days. You should take action quickly and report such transactions immediately via official channels for better chances of getting money back.
