The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has added two new features that change how users can make payments and manage transaction-related issues. The additions include a tap-and-pay option at point-of-sale (POS) terminals and an AI-based support platform with new payment controls.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has launched UPI Tap And Pay, and MyUPI at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. The Tap And Pay feature will use Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, while MyUPI has been built using FiMI, the Small Language Model of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

How Will UPI Tap And Pay Function

UPI Tap And Pay has brought NFC-based payments to POS terminals. Users with an NFC-enabled smartphone can unlock the device and tap it on an NFC-enabled POS terminal to make a payment.

The transaction can use the POS terminal's internet connection, so the smartphone does not need mobile internet connectivity for the payment.

The feature supports different UPI-linked account types, including RuPay Credit Card on UPI. Payments of up to Rs 5,000 can be made without entering a UPI PIN. For transactions above Rs 5,000, the PIN has to be entered on the POS terminal.

The development has come a year after UPI biometric authentication was introduced at GFF 2025. According to NPCI data, biometric-authenticated UPI transactions have crossed 6.29 billion as of August 31, 2026.

MyUPI Brings New Payment Controls

MyUPI is an AI-powered platform built using FiMI, NPCI's Small Language Model. It brings UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across banks and UPI apps into a single view.

MyUPI will provide a single view of UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across banks and UPI apps. It has also added tools that will allow users to have more control over specific payment situations.

The platform also includes controls for users who suspect suspicious activity. The Safety Switch lets users request that UPI debit transactions be declined if they believe their account has been compromised.

UPI Number Delink provides an option to delink a mobile number used for receiving UPI payments. Payee Context-based Information gives users additional information about a beneficiary before they make a payment. These features are part of an expanded UPI Help interface, which also provides 24x7 multilingual support and self-service options.

Chargebacks And Past Payments Get New Options

MyUPI has also introduced Automated Chargeback Processing for eligible transactions. Under this feature, a chargeback request can be created in real time for transactions that qualify.

Transaction Replay provides a way to repeat an earlier payment without having to recreate all the transaction details. Users can recall a past transaction and initiate it again through any UPI app. The new tools cover different stages of a UPI payment, from checking information about a beneficiary before paying to managing transactions and raising eligible chargeback requests afterwards.
