UPI Transaction Count Hits Record High In August, Rises 22 Per Cent YoY

Digital payments continued to see strong activity in August, with the UPI transactions reaching a new monthly record as more users depend on the platform for everyday payments. The latest numbers from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) show that UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions during the month.

According to data shared by NPCI on X, formerly known as Twitter, UPI transaction value stood at Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August, while the average daily transaction count was 791 million. The average daily transaction value stood at Rs 96,205 crore during the month. On a year-on-year basis, transaction count grew 22 per cent, while transaction value increased 20 per cent.

UPI Transaction Volume Rises 22 Per cent YoY

UPI processed 20.01 billion transactions in August 2025 as compared with 24.51 billion transactions in August 2026. The increase reflects the 22 per cent year-on-year growth reported by NPCI.

The August figures also show a rise in transaction volumes compared with the previous month. In July, UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions, with the average daily transaction count at 763 million. Transaction volume therefore, increased by around 3.6 per cent month-on-month in August. The average daily transaction count also rose by around 28 million between July and August, indicating higher transaction activity during the month.

Transaction Value Sees Marginal Dip

The total transaction value was slightly lower in August than in July. UPI recorded transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July as compared with Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August.

The average daily transaction value also fell slightly from Rs 96,383 crore in July to Rs 96,205 crore in August. This shows that even though the number of transactions increased, the average value of transactions remained broadly similar. The monthly data shows a continued rise in UPI transaction volumes over the past few months. UPI processed 22.72 billion transactions in June, followed by 23.66 billion in July and 24.51 billion in August.

The latest figures show the continued scale of UPI in India’s digital payments ecosystem. With monthly transaction volumes remaining above 20 billion and average daily transactions nearing 800 million, the platform continues to see widespread use among users for everyday digital payments across the nation.
