UPI Transaction Value Reaches Rs 314 Lakh Crore In FY26, Govt Says In Lok Sabha

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments have expanded in recent years, with the digital payment platform witnessing growth in its user base and transaction volumes across India. The payment system has become an important part of the country’s digital payments ecosystem.

The expansion of UPI has also led to discussions around its usage, reach and security framework. In the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Lok Sabha MP Manna Lal Rawat raised questions on these aspects of UPI on July 20. He asked the government to share details on the number of users and transaction volumes on the platform, including state-wise user data. He also raised queries on UPI’s presence in overseas markets and the institutions partnering with India for such payment linkages.

The MP further asked about the steps taken by the government to strengthen the safety and transparency of UPI-based digital payments.

UPI Transaction Volume Rises Over Five Times In Five Years

In response, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that 55.49 crore users were onboarded on the UPI platform as of June 2026. The ministry also stated that UPI is a payment system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and is authorised under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.

According to the Lok Sabha reply, UPI transaction volumes have increased significantly over the last five financial years. Transaction volume rose from 4,595.61 crore in FY 2021-22 to 24,161.69 crore in FY 2025-26. During the same period, the value of UPI transactions increased from Rs 84.16 lakh crore in FY 2021-22 to Rs 314.23 lakh crore in FY 2025-26.

The ministry shared that UPI transactions stood at 8,371.44 crore in volume and Rs 139.15 lakh crore in value in FY 2022-23. In FY 2023-24, transaction volume increased to 13,112.95 crore, while the transaction value reached Rs 199.95 lakh crore. In FY 2024-25, UPI transactions further rose to 18,586.60 crore in volume and Rs 260.56 lakh crore in value.

Government Lists Measures To Strengthen UPI Security

The Ministry of Finance said that the government, RBI and NPCI have undertaken various initiatives to make UPI-based transactions more secure and transparent. These include risk-based transaction limits to curb fraudulent activities, safeguards against unauthorised mobile number changes and misuse of SMS-based authentication.

The ministry added that NPCI has issued the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework (CUISF) 2025 and the Mobile Application Security Framework, which mandate advanced security controls to strengthen the safety and resilience of the UPI ecosystem.

UPI International Linkages Expand

The Ministry of Finance also highlighted UPI’s international expansion. UPI-based person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions are live through partner institutions across nine countries, including Bhutan, Singapore, the UAE, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Qatar and Cambodia. Meanwhile, person-to-person (P2P) transactions are available through partner institutions in three countries, which include Singapore, Nepal and Greece, with Singapore and Nepal having linkages for both P2M and P2P transactions.
