Aadhaar users who have changed their email address can update it through the Aadhaar mobile app. The new process lets them make the change from their phone. As such, there is no need for them to go to an Aadhaar enrolment centre for this update.
The service comes without a fee until December 31, 2026. After putting in the request, users get an Update Request Number, or URN, which can be used to check whether the change has been processed.
In order to initiate the process, one must first download the New Aadhaar app from the designated app store, and not from any third-party website, as doing so can increase the chances of fraud.
Once downloaded, open the app and log in using your 12-digit Aadhaar number. An OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked to the Aadhaar.
Once logged in, head to the Services section and tap “Email Add/Update”. The option will carry a “Free” label until December 31, 2026.
Enter the email address you want to add to your Aadhaar. The app will send an OTP to the new email address. Enter that OTP to confirm the email belongs to you.
You will then have to complete face authentication, too. This has to be done with the front camera of the phone. Follow the instructions on the screen and finish the authentication.
Before submitting the request, check the email address once. Submit the application and note down the URN generated by the app. This number can be used in future to track the request.
Users can check the status of the new email through the UIDAI website after the request has been processed.
Go to Aadhaar Services and choose “Verify Email/Mobile Number”.
Enter your Aadhaar number, the new email address and the CAPTCHA shown on the screen. Request an OTP and enter the code received in the email inbox.
A confirmation message will appear if the email address has been successfully linked to the Aadhaar.
The email update is free through December 31, 2026. The request is generally processed within a few hours, though the exact time can differ from one request to another.
Users who want to make the change offline can visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. A fee may apply for an update carried out at the centre.
