The redemption request dates may be subject to change in case of an unscheduled holiday, according to the RBI. Investors opting for premature redemption of their SGBs can submit their requests within the applicable window through the respective receiving office, NSDL, CDSL or RBI Retail Direct, as per the prescribed process. In case the request is not submitted within the specified window, investors may have to wait until the next eligible interest payment date or the maturity of the bond.

How Is The SGB Redemption Price Calculated?

SGBs are government securities denominated in grams of gold and serve as an alternative to holding physical gold, which can be redeemed in Indian Rupees. The redemption price is calculated based on the simple average of the closing price of gold of 999 purity for the previous three business days before the repayment date, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Limited (IBJA).

Also, SGB investors earn returns through gold price appreciation as well as interest income. The bonds offer an annual interest rate of 2.5 per cent on the original investment amount, which is paid semi-annually throughout the tenure of the bond.
