Cryptocurrency exchange WazirX has reported a recovery in trading activity a year after resuming operations following restructuring, with a growth in active traders, trading volumes and customer deposits. The exchange restarted in October 2025 after a prolonged suspension following a cyber attack.

WazirX said 95 per cent of trading activity since the restart came from returning users. The number of active traders more than doubled between July and September 2026, while average monthly trades per active trader rose approximately 100 per cent between November 2025 and September 2026.

The company said eligible users received approximately 85 per cent of their approved claims following the restart. It has continued implementing the customer recovery framework under its court-approved Scheme of Arrangement, including distributing Recovery Tokens to eligible customers on January 8, 2026.

The tokens represent proportional entitlements to potential future recoveries as assets are recovered and profits become available, subject to the scheme’s terms.

Futures Trading Drives Volume Growth

WazirX reported an increase in monthly futures trading by 243 per cent between July and September 2026, up 62 times since the product’s public launch on May 13, 2026. Monthly spot trading volume also rose 124 per cent, according to the exchange.

During the year, WazirX introduced rupee-margined perpetual contracts and expanded its offering to include contracts linked to global stocks, precious metals, and energy markets. It also added features, such as take-profit and stop-loss controls.

Higher trading activity coincided with an increase in customer deposits. WazirX reported an 88 per cent rise in individual deposits, while the number of customers making deposits increased 78.90 per cent between November 2025 and September 2026. The company also said its customer base expanded beyond India’s largest urban centres.

Customer recovery remains a challenge

WazirX said its internal customer satisfaction metric exceeded 90 per cent, alongside improvements in first-response turnaround time. The metric is based on the company’s own assessment.

Nischal Shetty, founder of WazirX, told Outlook Money, “The central challenge was rebuilding confidence after the cyber attack, the prolonged suspension of operations, and the financial impact on customers. Resuming trading was only the first step; users needed reassurance about asset security, access to funds, customer support, and the recovery process.”

Shetty added that customers had different priorities after the restart, with some wanting to continue trading while others wanted to sell or exit. “Our focus was on enabling those choices and earning back confidence through the experience we delivered,” he said.
