Buying gold jewellery is something most people do with a lot of excitement and trust, whether it is for a wedding, festival or saving for the future. At that moment, people typically tend to focus more on design and price and less on small details. But there are a few basic markings on gold that are worth noticing before making the purchase.

Hallmark is the first thing to look at when buying gold jewellery as it shows that the piece has been tested and certified. HUID, which stands for Hallmark Unique Identification, was introduced in 2021 and has since then been hallmarked on every piece of gold jewellery. It bears three key marks – BIS logo, the purity shown in carat and fineness, and a six digit alphanumeric HUID code.

Key Hallmark Signs You Should Not Miss

BIS standard mark: This is the triangular Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) logo which shows the jewellery has been verified and certified by BIS in authorised labs. This serves as an assurance that the gold item has passed official quality checks.

Purity and Fitness Mark: Purity and fineness mark shows how pure is the gold, like 22K916 for 22 carat and 18K750 for 18 carat. It helps buyers know what purity they are actually paying for.

HUID: HUID is a 6-digit alphanumeric code given to each hallmarked gold jewellery piece. It supports tracking the item and ensures that the jewellery is properly checked.

How To Verify Hallmarked Gold Jewellery

First, check the jewellery for basic markings, such as the BIS logo, purity mark, and HUID number. All these should be clearly visible on the piece. Then, carefully note down the HUID number, which is a 6-digit alphanumeric code. Even a small mistake while noting it can lead to wrong results.

After that, open the BIS Care app or visit the BIS website. There you will find an option to check for the hallmark verification. Enter the HUID number in the search box and submit it.

Once you do that, the system will show details like purity, name of the jeweller and the hallmarking centre. If everything matches, then it is a confirmation that the jewellery is properly verified.

The verification process of gold purity is usually not that difficult once you know the basics. It is always better to buy hallmarked gold from certified jewellers, as it helps protect your money and ensures you are getting genuine quality.
