Sensex Settles 170 Points Lower Amid Weekly Futures And Options Expiry, Nifty 50 Ends At 25,405

Markets ended an uneventful session slightly lower amid weekly F&O expiry

The stock market saw a volatile session on July 3, 2025, amid weekly futures and options (F&O) expiry and settled marginally lower. The Sensex shed 170.22 points, or 0.20 per cent, to close at 83,239.47, and the Nifty 50 slipped 48.10 points, or 0.19 per cent, to end at 25,405.30.

The broader market indices were mixed. The Nifty Midcap 100 closed flat, with a slight positive bias, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.26 per cent. Nifty 500, on the other hand, closed 0.11 per cent lower. The Nifty Microcap 250, which tracks the top 250 companies beyond the Nifty 500 universe, settled 0.05 per cent higher. 

On the sectoral front, the trend was mixed. Auto, pharma, consumer durables, and oil and gas sectors gained, while banks, realty, banks and financial services were the top sectoral losers.

Sensex, Nifty 50: Top Gainers & Losers

From the Nifty 50 index, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Apollo Hospitals, Hero MotoCorp, ONGC, Maruti Suzuki India, and Cipla gained the most, while SBI Life, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finserv, JSW Steel, Grasim Industries, Bajaj Finance and Adani Ports were the top losers.

Among the Sensex stocks, Maruti Suzuki India, Infosys, Asian Paints, NTPC, Hindustan Unilever, Eternal and Tata Motors were the top gainers, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, Titan, Trent and State Bank of India were the top losers.

How Global Stocks Ended

In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi closed higher by 1.34 per cent, Japan's Nikkei 225 closed flat with a slight positive bias, China's SSE Composite gained 0.18 per cent, while the Hong Kong-based Hang Seng slipped 0.63 per cent.

European markets were trading on a mixed note, with the Euro Stoxx 50 index trading lower by 0.14 per cent. France's CAC 40 index was down 0.10 per cent, Germany's DAX was up by 0.07 per cent, and United Kingdom's FTSE 100 was up by 0.45 per cent.

Earlier on July 2, the US markets ended mostly higher. The S&P 500 rose 29 points, or 0.47 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite outperformed with a gain of 190 points, or 0.94 per cent. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended flat, slipping a minor 10 points or 0.02 per cent.

Key Cues To Watch Tomorrow

India-US Trade Talks: A Firstpost report, citing top government officials, claimed that India and the US may finalise a deal within a day or two. With the 90-day tariff pause deadline on July 9 fast approaching, investors will be keeping a close eye on further developments in this space.

Key Macroeconomic Data: US will be releasing unemployment rate data and services PMI data, which will be tracked in the next trade.

Q1 FY26 Earnings: The Q1 FY26 earnings season is ongoing and investors will be reacting to earnings expectation reports from brokerages houses.
