All her life, she was compared to her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, and was even paid less than her, but she carved her niche by selecting experimental songs, such as cabaret, which Lata Mangeshkar did not sing. She created her space and identity despite Lata’s larger presence in the industry.

She was married to Ganpatrao Bhosle at age 16, but separated in 1960. Later, in 1980, she married music composer Rahul Dev Burman. Her two children Hemant and Varsha predeceased her, and she is now survived by her son Anand. Burman died in 1994.

A Legacy Of Music And Business Acumen

Her financial legacy is as impressive as her musical legacy, with her net worth estimated at approximately Rs 100 crore as of 2026.

However, other estimates put it in the range of Rs 200-250 crore, according to a report in the Economic Times. Her financial portfolio is diversified with more than one source of income. It includes royalties from her playback singing, and a global restaurant chain named “Asha’s” with premium outlets in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Birmingham and Manchester in the UK.

Reportedly, she also owned multiple iconic properties in Mumbai and Pune, including her long-time residence, Prabhu Kunj on Peddar Road. Notably, her real estate assets alone are worth around Rs 100 crore.

Her experimental acumen and grit to pursue her choices throughout her life led her to be not only a legend in her profession, but also to become successful in creating a business empire.

Her legacy lives on through her timeless songs, such as Dum Maro Dum, O Mere Sona Re, Jhumka Gira Re, Mera Kuchh Saaman, Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar, Radha Kaise Na Jale, among many others. Her voice remains a timeless gift to the world of music.
