Bank branches in select states and cities across India will remain closed on Monday, October 26, 2026, due to regional festivals and observances. This includes Laxmi Puja, Accession Day and Maharishi Valmiki’s Birthday. However, this holiday is not applicable nationwide, and customers in other locations can expect normal branch operations.
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bank holiday calendar, banks will remain closed in Agartala, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Shimla. Customers who are planning a visit to their branches of State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and other lenders should check the holiday calendar in their city to check if the holiday is applicable to their location.
The October 26 bank holiday is based on regional observances, rather than just a nationwide closure. The locations that are observing a holiday are listed below.
In Agartala, Tripura, banks are closed as the city is observing Laxmi Puja.
In Chandigarh, banks are closed for the observance of Maharishi Valmiki’s birthday.
In Jammu and Kashmir, banks are closed for the observance of Accession Day.
In Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, banks are closed for Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti as well.
The closure is based on RBI's location-specific holiday schedule. Customers should confirm the status of their individual branch, as the observance of a holiday in one city does not mean that banks are closed all across the country.
The holiday schedule applies to bank branches that are operating in affected locations, rather than to a lender alone, according to a report by Livemint. Hence, branches of SBI, HDFC, ICICI Bank, Punjab National Bank and other banks in the said locations will remain closed on October 26, 2026. Customers should not assume that because banks are closed in these areas, banks across the country will be closed.
However, customers should not assume that all branches of a bank will be shut across India. Branch operations depend on the holiday schedule applicable to the particular city or location. Services like cash deposits, document submission, KYC updation, locker activity and other branch-related activities will be affected in the stated areas.
Before visiting a bank’s branch, customers should check the RBI’s official state-wise holiday calendar or contact their bank to confirm whether their branch will operate today or not. This is particularly important for people who need to complete any time-sensitive activities.
