Census 2027: West Bengal Begins Self-Enumeration Drive

As the Census 2027 drive unfolds in India, West Bengal has become one of the first states to roll out the self-enumeration phase of India’s Census 2027. This process allows citizens to submit their household details online before the officials begin the door-to-door process of verification. The digital exercise, which started on August 01, 2026, is a significant step towards India’s transition to a technology-enabled census process.

The self-enumeration window will be open for 15 days, that is, until August 15, 2026, according to a report by LiveMint. During this period, citizens can provide details about themselves and their households voluntarily through the government’s dedicated self-enumeration portal. The initiative is aimed at making the census process more convenient while reducing the time taken to do this in person.

Is The Online Method Mandatory?

As per the report, officials have clarified that self-enumeration is not a mandatory process. Citizens who choose not to opt for the online process or do not have the means to will be covered in the regular house-to-house survey. Authorities have encouraged citizens to use the digital facility to quicken the process, as it takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

How To Participate?

In order to participate, residents will need to register their valid mobile number on the self-enumeration portal. After this, they need to fill in their required demographic details. Once the details are submitted, the system generates a unique 11-digit self-enumeration ID (SEID). This ID should be safely kept and shared only with the census enumerator who visits during the in-person visit. This would enable the officers to access the details that are already submitted.

The digital exercise does not require residents to upload any documents or go through any verification process while filling out the form. Instead, this process is entirely based on the person submitting the details to the best of their knowledge. Truthful reporting is also essential to ensure reliable data is collected.

This voluntary drive is the first phase of Census 2027, which includes house listing and housing data collection. Once the online window closes, trained enumerators will begin physical visits to households from mid-August to cross-check details and collect information from those who did not complete the online process.

This Census is also notable for being the country’s first large-scale digital census, which combines online self-reporting with traditional surveys. This exercise is expected to improve the efficiency of data collection while reducing duplication and manual paperwork.
