The United States (US) has triggered anxiety among students and professionals by sharply raising the fee for new H-1B visa applications. All fresh petitions will now cost $100,000. At the same time, China has announced a new “K visa” aimed at attracting young professionals in science and technology, according to a recent report by NDTV.

Premier Li Qiang has signed a decree to amend the country’s rules on the entry and exit of foreigners. The new visa category will take effect on October 1.

What The K Visa Offers

China currently has 12 types of ordinary visas. The new K visa will be added to this list, offering greater convenience through multiple entries, longer validity, and extended stay periods. Applicants will have to meet age, education, and experience criteria, but unlike many other visa types, they will not need an invitation from a local employer. Officials say this is meant to make the process simpler and quicker.

At a press briefing, the government said China’s growth needs contributions from global talent. “Our development requires the participation of talent from around the world, and China’s development also provides opportunities for them,” officials explained.

China’s Wider Visa Push

The K visa comes alongside Beijing’s broader effort to relax travel and work rules for foreigners. China has already signed mutual visa-free arrangements with 75 countries. According to immigration data, foreign nationals made more than 38 million trips into or out of the country in the first half of 2025, up 30 per cent from a year earlier. Of these, 13.6 million were visa-free entries, a jump of nearly 54 per cent.

Officials believe the new visa will encourage young professionals not only in science and technology but also in cultural and educational exchanges and entrepreneurial activities.

The US Contrast

The American move is in stark contrast. Under President Donald Trump’s proclamation, all H-1B applications filed after September 21 will carry the $100,000 fee. The change covers the FY2026 lottery and all subsequent petitions.

The White House said the measure is designed to safeguard American jobs and strengthen national security. Trump also unveiled a “Trump Gold Card” programme, offering residency for a payment of $1 million.

The sharp increase is expected to deter many young professionals, especially from India, which last year accounted for 71 per cent of approved H-1B visas. For these workers, the new fee could make the US an unaffordable option, while China positions itself as a more accessible alternative through the K visa.
