Delhi has seen a spate of fire tragedies of late; the most recent one in Hauz Rani claimed 21 lives. This has now raised serious questions and doubts on the existing fire hazard safety infrastructure at densely-populated localities like Hauz Rani, which has several illegal constructions serving as bed and breakfast (B&B) inns.

The Delhi government has now reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards such unauthorised constructions and violations towards building norms. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said that no individual or institution will be allowed to endanger public safety through such illegal constructions. Her statement came amid the citywide enforcement drive that was launched in the aftermath of these fire tragedies.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also demolished three unauthorised properties and sealed 12 others on June 7, 2026 as part of this initiative. Since June 1, civic authorities have razed down 97 illegal structures and sealed 126 properties across the city as a way to reinforce the zero-tolerance policy. In addition to this, 84 show-cause notices, 41 sealing notices and 33 demolition orders have been passed against the violators, according to a report by news agency PTI.

“The government is not only acting against illegal constructions but is also working towards developing a system that can effectively curb such dangerous and unauthorised constructions in the future. The objective is to ensure that no building, commercial establishment or public-use facility operates in Delhi if it poses a risk to people’s lives and property,” said Gupta.

Aside from MCD’s actions, the Revenue Department has conducted inspections of 134 establishments across Delhi on June 7. These inspections covered hotels, guest houses, educational institutions, banquet halls and other commercial establishments, which have resulted in a series of show-cause notices, closure orders, and even sealing orders. West Delhi has emerged as a major focus point where 31 inspections were carried out. Several hotels were found operating without basic clearances. Additionally, B&B occupancies were penalised for exceeding the permitted room limits and concealing the firefighting equipment. Most of these facilitators were functioning without a fire NOC.

In Central Delhi, authorities have taken action against multiple hospitality establishments, where most of them were shut down for operating without a fire NOC. A few were sealed for blocked emergency exits, expired gas cylinders, and locked exits. Additionally, penalties were imposed for exposed electrical wiring and the lack of emergency evacuation plans.

For the future outlook, the Delhi government is exploring long-term reforms to strengthen building safety compliance. The CM has said that authorities are examining the possibility of introducing third-party insurance mechanisms for public use buildings, guest houses, nursing homes, and similar establishments to improve accountability.
