Senior citizens will now have an additional verification step while making bank transfers under a new double OTP system introduced by Haryana Police in coordination with banks. The system is introduced to reduce the chances of cyber fraud cases, including digital arrest scams and forced money transfers, especially targeting elderly account holders.

Under this feature, transactions initiated by customers aged 60 years and above will require OTP verification from both the account holder and a trusted contact before money is transferred.

Double OTP System

In this system, two separate OTPs are generated during a transaction. One OTP is sent to the senior citizen’s registered mobile number linked with the bank account. The second OTP will be sent to the mobile number of a trusted contact, usually a family member chosen by the account holder.

The bank will process the transfer only after both OTPs are entered and verified. If either OTP is not confirmed, the transaction will not go through. The facility is optional, and senior citizens can choose to add a trusted contact for this service.

Pilot Rollout In Select Branches

The system is currently being tested in select branches of HDFC Bank in Gurugram and Panchkula. Around 50 branches are part of the pilot rollout. The bank is making system changes to support this double verification process.

Haryana Police has worked with banking authorities on this initiative to address rising cases of online financial fraud affecting senior citizens. The project is being run in a limited phase before any wider rollout decision.

Purpose And Safety Measures

The system has been introduced to reduce cases where senior citizens are pressured into transferring money through fraud calls or fake legal threats. Officials say many such scams rely on urgency and fear, leading to quick decisions without verification.

IPS officer Upasana, who shared details of the initiative, said the double OTP system adds an extra layer of confirmation for safer banking. The aim is to ensure that transactions by senior citizens are checked by a trusted contact before funds are transferred.
