Cyber scams are rising in India, becoming a growing concern for digital users across the country. Cases of online fraud and financial deception have increased, affecting a large number of people through mobile and digital platforms. According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), cyber fraud losses in the country have crossed Rs 52,000 crore in the last five years.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) shared this data during a press conference held on the occasion of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day related to telecom security, cyber safety, and digital inclusion initiatives.

DoT Outlines Measures To Address Cyber Fraud

Ajay Kamal, DDG (Administration), Mumbai LSA, said India’s telecom and cyber security framework has been strengthened through regulatory updates, including the Telecommunications Act, 2023 and the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024. He added that technologies such as AI are being used for fraud detection, network monitoring, and system security.

Officials said efforts are being coordinated across telecom operators, financial institutions, and enforcement agencies to address cyber fraud across the ecosystem.

The Sanchar Saathi platform has recorded over 1.7 crore app downloads and more than 23 crore visits. It allows users to block lost mobile phones and report suspected fraud. Nearly 10 lakh devices, valued at over Rs 1,250 crore, have been blocked or traced so far.

Officials added that 3.4 crore suspicious mobile numbers have been disconnected, while over 2.27 lakh fraudulent devices have been blocked. In addition, around 16.97 lakh WhatsApp accounts linked to cyber fraud have been deactivated.

Ashish Pathak, Additional DG (Telecom), Mumbai LSA, said, “The Government of Maharashtra, in coordination with telecom authorities, is actively implementing measures to curb cybercrime and strengthen digital safety.”

A Digital Intelligence Platform, connecting more than 1,200 organisations, including banks and law enforcement agencies, has helped freeze over 59 lakh suspicious bank accounts, preventing losses of more than Rs 1,000 crore.

Officials also highlighted telecom expansion initiatives, including improved rural connectivity, solar-powered mobile towers, and the establishment of over 100 5G laboratories in engineering colleges to support research and skill development.
