Delhi Gymkhana wait reaches 40 years

Exclusivity drives elite club culture
In an era where luxury memberships can be bought instantly with money, India's legacy gymkhana clubs remain a niche and a very exclusive entry, even for those with enough money. These clubs follow a different rulebook of exclusivity through scarcity.
At the centre of public attention right now is the Delhi Gymkhana Club. According to media reports, any non-government applicant may have to wait up to 40 years and pay nearly Rs 22 lakh for a permanent membership at the club.
The conversations around these clubs have caught attention due to the ongoing legal dispute between the club and the Centre over the land it occupies in Lutyens' Delhi. There lies a bigger question as to why Indians want and fantasise about such institutions that focus solely on exclusivity and status?
Gymkhana clubs are not just complexes with sports facilities. Their roots have had a strong footing ever since the British colonial era. Back then, they were designed exclusively for officers and the elites to have a recreational time. Over time, these clubs became a hub of powerful social ecosystems that combined sports, networking, dining, heritage, and status.
Today, these destinations are seen less as sports facilities, and more as symbols of old-money lineage and social status. Memberships to these clubs are a go-ahead into the lives of influential circles that have historically included bureaucrats, military officers, diplomats, judges, and other prominent stakeholders of the society.
According to a report by NDTV, if one wishes to seek a membership at the Delhi Gymkhana, they have to wait for vacancies to open up. The club has around 5,600 permanent members. The vacancies open up only if one resigns from their slot or passes away. This creates a long waiting period for those who wish to seek a membership.
For the government category applicants, the waiting period is 15-20 years, with memberships costing nearly Rs 5.50 lakh. For non-government applicants, the timeline can stretch to 35-45 years, with costs increasing up to Rs 22 lakh. Another expense is the joining fee, which one can expect to pay around Rs 1.50 lakh to enter the waiting list.
One of the biggest reasons these clubs remain aspirational is that they remain difficult to access. Unlike other modern-day luxury clubs that function on pricing and facilities, these gymkhanas thrive on exclusivity. The limited membership cap creates a status for these clubs that money cannot easily buy.
Another reason why they are so sought after is that an entrance to these clubs often opens ways to influential networks. A membership here is seen as access to a powerful social ecosystem where businesses, relationships, and political familiarity increase.
These gymkhanas are, to this date, following the rigid traditions that were set when they started functioning. Formals, traditional attire, and specific sports uniforms are expected of their members in many areas. Casual clothing, such as distressed jeans, slogan T-shirts, and untucked shirts may be seen as off-putting. These rules reinforce the regulations that were set initially to set this institution apart from the upcoming modern-day set-ups.
