Travelling long distances by train has been one of the most common, available and convenient forms of travel for Indians for ages. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is all set to launch a revamped version of its website on July 15, 2026. This change is expected to introduce a range of improvements aimed at making bookings faster, smoother and much more user-friendly. The announcement was made by the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, after he received complaints from a student about difficulties faced while booking tickets online.
One of the major highlights of the upgrade is an increase in the booking capacity. The existing system can process around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute, as per a report by Livemint. The new platform is expected to handle more than 1.5 lakh bookings per minute. This is nearly a five-fold increase in the booking system. This enhancement is likely to provide relief during periods when the server is facing peak bookings, especially when the demand surges for Tatkal tickets.
Apart from this, the upgraded reservation system will also be capable of processing over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. The present capacity is about 4 lakh enquiries. This improvement is expected to reduce delays and improve response time for users.
The report cites that the new website is about to introduce several passenger-focused features. Travellers will be able to indicate their preferred seat choices while booking tickets. Another major addition is a fare calendar, where users will be able to cross-check and compare ticket prices on different days. This would help them identify affordable options for their tickets. The new platform is expected to support multiple languages as well, which will help users of a multilingual nature to use the app more conveniently.
Another addition to this is that the in-app facility for Divyangjan passengers, students, and patients will be integrated into a particular page for easier access.
The key focus behind this is to improve the overall user experience. As per the report, the new interface will eliminate unnecessary pop-ups, flashing graphics and excessive CAPTCHA verifications that mostly end up interrupting the booking process. The changes are expected to make navigation simpler and reduce friction during high-pressure booking periods.
The revamp comes at a time when most digital infrastructures in India have been updated; however, the IRCTC web page receives complaints and concerns regarding its slow loading times, booking failures, and long waiting periods. This update is expected to tackle these long-standing problems that users face.
