Maharashtra Day 2025: Notably, the upcoming trading week is scheduled to be a truncated one as the stock market will remain closed on Thursday, May 01, 2025

May 1 Holiday: Indian headline indices extended losses for the second straight day on April 25. The 30-share Sensex ended lower by 0.74 per cent at 79,212.53. The benchmark Nifty 50 index closed in the red down by 0.86 per cent at 24,039.35 levels. After the two-day decline investors are waiting for trading activity to resume.

Notably, the upcoming trading week is scheduled to be a truncated one as the stock market will remain closed on Thursday, May 01, 2025.  No trading activity will take place across any segment on May 1.

The Indian stock market is expected to remain closed on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day. Maharashtra Day is observed to commemorate the formation of the state of Maharashtra. A public holiday is observed on May 1. Since the state of Maharashtra observes a public holiday on the day, Mumbai based exchanges like the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) remain closed on May 1.

Morning trade on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also be halted on May 01. The morning session of the MCX is held between 9 AM and 5 PM. Trading activity on the MCX will resume in the evening session, which is held from 5 PM to 11:55 PM.

Market Holidays In 2025

According to the the NSE calendar, there are 8 stock market holidays left in calendar year 2025. After the market holiday on May 1 the trade activity will be halted later this year in August on two occasions Independence Day (August 15) and on Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27).

In the month of October trading activity will be halted on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Diwali (October 21) and on the occasion of Balipratipada (October 22). In November the market will remain closed on the occasion of Gurupurab (November 5) and in December on the occasion of Christmas (December 25).

Banks are also expected to remain closed on May 1 in Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram according to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday list for May.
