India’s two largest organised milk retailers, Amul and Mother Dairy, have revised prices across key milk variants. The hike comes more than a year after the previous revision and is expected to add pressure on household budgets at a time when food inflation remains elevated.

Higher Costs Drive Increase

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets milk and dairy products under the Amul brand, said to PTI that the increase has been driven by higher costs of cattle feed, fuel and milk packaging materials. It added that procurement prices paid to farmers have also increased by Rs 30 per kg of fat, reflecting a 3.7 per cent rise over May 2025.

GCMMF also stated that the price increase is around 2.5-3.5 per cent per litre, which remains lower than the average food inflation rate. The cooperative added that it passes on a significant share of sales realisation to milk producers.

Mother Dairy have stated to PTI that the revision is deemed necessary due to a sustained rise in farmer procurement prices, which have increased by about 6 per cent over the past year. It added that the latest increase represents only a partial pass-through of higher costs while maintaining a balance between farmers’ earnings and consumer prices.

Impact On Consumers And Procurement Structure

Both companies said that around 75-80 per cent of their sales realisation is passed on to milk producers, making procurement costs a key driver of retail prices.

Revised Milk Prices In Key Markets

Under the revised pricing structure in Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh, Amul’s 500 ml Taaza milk pack will cost Rs 30, while Gold milk will cost Rs 36. For a 500 ml pack, the Slim N variant will cost Rs 27. Cow milk has been priced at Rs 31 per 500 ml pack. Buffalo milk has seen a Rs 4 per litre increase to Rs 80.
