Online dating scams are becoming increasingly common, concerning people of all ages and cities. These scams occur when someone develops a false identity or narrative on dating sites, resulting in unexpected and often costly situations. Recently, a Tinder date in Delhi reportedly ended with a hefty cafe bill, according to a Reddit post.
A Delhi user shared his experience on Reddit under the title "TINDER SCAM, [PSA] Got scammed on a Tinder date – beware of cafes running scams in Karkardooma (Delhi)." He said a Tinder date in the city ended with a cafe bill of more than Rs 50,000. According to him, he had matched with someone on Tinder and they decided to meet at a cafe in Karkardooma, situated on the second floor of Chawla's building, next to the HP petrol pump near the metro station. He mentioned that everything seemed normal initially during the meeting.
He further explained that after they ordered, the staff kept encouraging him to choose expensive items and did not properly show the menu. According to him, by the end of the visit, he was handed a bill exceeding Rs 50,000 for just food and drinks. To prove his claim, he also attached a photo of the receipt and described the incident as a scam targeting people who meet strangers through dating apps.
He described the situation as a scam by pointing out that certain cafes take advantage of customers who meet through dating apps by presenting unexpectedly high bills. He also advised others to exercise caution when visiting new cafes, particularly those near metro stations, and to check internet reviews before entering.
The post has gone viral on Reddit, attracting over 3,500 upvotes and 1,485 comments, sparking widespread discussion about online dating scams.
In response to the post, another user shared a similar experience involving a relative in Kolkata. According to the comment, the relative's son filed a consumer fraud case against a restaurant after being charged for extra items he had not ordered. The restaurant reportedly did not have cameras, so he maintained that he had only ordered a single item.
The consumer court ruled in his favor by noting that it was unlikely a single college student could have consumed food and drinks worth Rs 35,000. He received Rs 75,000 in compensation, and the restaurant was get fined of Rs 1.5 lakh. The reddit user suggests that the Delhi user can consider a similar approach.
The Reddit post and comments highlight that online dating encounters can sometimes lead to unexpected and costly situations.
