PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana: Centre Directs Banks To Fix PM-Kisan Glitches

The Centre has directed banks to reduce failed transactions under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana after reports that unmapped Aadhaar numbers, closed accounts and incomplete KYC checks are delaying payments to millions of farmers

PM Kisan Samman Nidhi

The government has asked banks to bring down transaction failures under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. The scheme transfers Rs 6,000 annually to eligible farmers in three instalments directly to their bank accounts. Several beneficiaries, however, have faced delays or non-receipt of payments in recent rounds.

Reasons Behind Payment Failures

One reason being cited for the large number of failed transactions is that Aadhaar numbers are not correctly mapped to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts. In many instances, account details submitted by beneficiaries point to loan accounts or fixed deposit accounts rather than active savings accounts, according to a report in The Economic Times. Other problems include closed or inactive accounts and incomplete know your customer verification.

Inaccurate beneficiary data leads to automated rejections during the payment cycle. Where Aadhaar linkage is absent or incorrect, the system flags the transfer and the amount is not credited. Similarly, accounts that are frozen or dormant cannot receive credits until they are reactivated and KYC formalities are completed.

Bank Response and State-Level Drives

According to the report, the government has now instructed banks to initiate state-level drives to trace and correct such issues. The drives are to identify account details verification, know-your-customer (KYC) document updates and settle inactive or closed accounts cases. Bank officials said that branches and regional units have been asked to give priority to PM-Kisan exceptions and make weekly reports on the action taken to resolve the issue.

Previous Instalments

Since its launch in 2019, the PM-Kisan scheme has released 20 instalments till date. The 19th instalment, worth more than Rs 22,000 crore, was disbursed in February 2024 to more than 98 million farmers. The 20th instalment, of about Rs 20,500 crore, was announced in August 2024, but was credited in the beneficiaries' accounts after a short delay. In both these cases, the government credited funds directly into beneficiaries’ accounts through the direct benefit transfer system. The government has not made any official statements regarding the 21st instalment of PM Kisan, though it is expected to be credited during October-November 2025.

The scheme has cumulatively disbursed over Rs 3.90 lakh crore till date. For the financial year 2025-26, the government has earmarked Rs 63,500 crore for continuing the programme.

Impact on Farmers

For millions of small and marginal farmers, the Rs 6,000 yearly assistance is a major additional income that assists in covering farm and household expenses. Technical glitches can impact this stream of funds. By instructing banks to fix such glitches, the government wants to ensure that future instalments are credited to the beneficiaries without any disruption.
