Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the transfer of funds under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) on his 75th birthday in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. Almost 10 lakh women registered under the scheme and eligible for it are likely to benefit. PMMVY offers funds to pregnant and lactating women to support their nutritional requirements and to promote institutional births.
Authorities assured that the transfer of funds will be carried out directly to the bank accounts of beneficiaries. This process is meant to make it transparent and cut down on delays or administrative barriers to disbursement of assistance to women.
The PMMVY is a government scheme implemented by the centre for helping women both before and after childbirth. Beneficiaries receive financial assistance in instalments, which is disbursed at various stages of pregnancy and even after birth. The scheme promotes institutional deliveries and also aims to enhance maternal and child health in general by offering funds for medical and nutritional care.
Under PMMVY, pregnant women and lactating mothers receive a cash incentive of Rs 5,000 for the first child, disbursed in two instalments, and a payment of Rs 6,000 for a second child if that child is a girl, to promote a positive attitude toward the girl child.
The scheme promotes institutional deliveries and also aims to enhance maternal and child health in general by offering funds for medical and nutritional care. The benefits provided for the second child is a key feature of the PMMVY 2.0 under the Mission Shakti guidelines, aiming to improve the sex ratio at birth.
The announcement made today in Dhar also mentioned that the scheme aims to enrol women from backward areas where maternal health indicators are below the national average.
Women may register under the PMMVY scheme either offline or online.

Pregnant and lactating women with no access to the internet can register at their local Anganwadi centre or public health facility. Mothers will receive help from officials fill forms, affixing necessary documents, and submit the form for verification. Documents required are proof of identity, bank account information, and medical certificates of pregnancy or lactation.
All beneficiaries are required to have Aadhaar-linked bank accounts so that funds are credited directly to their accounts. Special registration campaigns are undertaken from time to time to cover women who have not yet enrolled.
As an addition to the announcement of fund transfer, Prime Minister Modi also unveiled other projects for women's health and well-being. The 'Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar' campaign aims to encourage nutrition and health education among women and families. A digital platform, the 'Suman Sakhi Chatbot', has been launched to offer advice on maternal health, childcare, and nutrition, especially in rural and remote locations. These efforts are designed to supplement PMMVY with both financial and knowledge assistance to mothers.
The government also made breakthroughs in health campaigns such as moving to increase sickle cell screening and counseling services. The programs are aimed at public health problems among women and children and are meant to enhance healthcare extension among marginalised communities.
The transfer of funds to PMMVY, which Prime Minister Modi announced on his 75th birthday in Dhar, is likely to support financial aid to close to 10 lakh mothers nationwide. With direct benefit transfers complemented by awareness and health schemes, the government aims at strengthening maternal and child care holistically.
Both online and offline enrolment takes place, allowing women from across all parts to get access to the scheme, thus making it more accessible and inclusive.
