Government reviewing beneficiary database
The Tamil Nadu government is all set to shift the beneficiaries of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai (KMUT) scheme. The KMUT scheme offers financial assistance to people above 60 years of age under the state’s old-age pension programme. This move is aimed at streamlining welfare distribution while also providing financial security to seniors in the state. Alongside the transition, the government plans to raise the monthly pension amount from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500, which is aimed at further easing things out for the elderly.
Under the present KMUT Scheme, the eligible women receive Rs 1,000 every month as their financial aid. It is a scheme that is designed to offer monthly assistance to support women in the state of Tamil Nadu. The amount is directly transferred into the accounts of the registered beneficiaries. The primary objective is to provide security to women and reduce their dependency. Under this scheme, the eligible women receive a sum of between Rs 1,000. The officials have now decided that the age of beneficiaries must be above 60. This also hints towards a more proactive approach towards a targeted social security mechanism.
The key highlight remains the increase in pension assistance. At present, the beneficiaries under the Tamil Nadu old-age pension scheme receive Rs 1,000 per month, whereas now, the government plans to raise it to Rs 1,500. If this is implemented, senior women who receive Rs 1,000 under the KMUT scheme would start receiving Rs 500 more. Directly helping them with financial planning and assistance.
Tamil Nadu runs one of the country’s most extensive welfare ecosystems, which covers women, senior citizens, differentially abled people, and low-income families. This way, the community is well catered to. Officials believe that transferring elderly beneficiaries from the KMUT scheme to the pension category would help rationalise the welfare planning while also keeping the benefits for the weaker sections persistent. The government is also reviewing the database of beneficiaries to identify individuals for this transition.
While the discussions are still happening for this proposal, the state government has not yet issued a detailed notification regarding the same. More clarity and feedback are yet to be delivered, which is expected to happen within the coming weeks.
