Divorcing? Review Health, Life, And Motor Insurance Before Gaps Emerge

Divorce changes several financial arrangements, but insurance policies do not necessarily change along with marital status. Policies may remain active with outdated nominees, ownership details, or contact information unless the policyholder approaches the insurer.

An individually purchased health or life policy generally continues after divorce if premiums are paid. The position may be different for a spouse covered under a family floater or an employer-sponsored health insurance plan.

“Divorce calls for a policy review, not automatic cancellation. An individually owned health or life policy generally continues while premiums are paid. Health Cover May Need To Be Separated

Spouses covered under a family floater should contact the insurer once they decide to separate their insurance arrangements. Depending on the policy terms, they may mutually agree to split the cover or ask the insurer to remove one spouse, usually around renewal.

The spouse leaving the floater should not wait until the existing cover ends before looking for an individual policy. Insurers may have different rules concerning migration, medical underwriting and waiting periods. Any break in coverage can create difficulties, particularly for someone undergoing treatment or managing a pre-existing condition.

Job and residential changes following a divorce may require another layer of checks. Employer health insurance can end when employment ends, while moving to another city may affect access to nearby cashless hospitals.

“Whenever employees switch jobs or move to a different city, they should examine their health insurance policies rather than rely on their existing coverage,” says Arun Ramamurthy, co-founder, Staywell.health.

Policyholders should examine the sum insured, room-rent limits, co-payments, exclusions and waiting periods. The hospital network in the new location should also be checked, especially where regular treatment is required.

“In case there are any ongoing health concerns of an employee or an employee's dependant, it should be ensured that the condition will be covered,” says Ramamurthy.

Change Nominees And Motor Policy Records

Divorce does not automatically delete a former spouse recorded as the nominee or beneficiary of a life insurance policy. The insurer may continue to rely on the information available in its records unless a formal change request is submitted.

“Divorce does not automatically remove a former spouse whose name appears in the policy as a nominee or beneficiary. The insurer will not ordinarily know that circumstances have changed,” says Bansal.

Policyholders should review nomination, ownership and assignment details, particularly when the policy is intended to protect children or other dependants. They should obtain an acknowledgement after the insurer updates its records. The sum assured, premium payment instructions, bank details, phone number, email address and residential address should also be checked.

Motor insurance needs attention when a jointly owned vehicle is allotted to one spouse. The registration certificate and insurance policy should be transferred to the new owner. The new owner should apply to the insurer within 14 days of the vehicle transfer so that an endorsement can be issued.

Home insurance, personal accident policies, critical illness plans, and insurance linked to loans should also be reviewed. The objective is to ensure that every policy reflects the policyholder’s present responsibilities and intended beneficiaries.
