A firecracker accident during the upcoming festival of Diwali can leave a family with hospital bills as well as the worry of lost income or a permanent injury. Short-term firecracker insurance may help with some of these costs, but the cover is limited to specified events and the policy’s stated period. Buyers should check what the plan pays, who can be insured, and what they must do to make a claim.

“Depending on the firecracker plan, benefits may include reimbursement of applicable medical costs, hospitalisation expenses, and a one-time payment in case of accidental death or certain permanent disability. Nonetheless, what is covered differs from one plan to the other,” says Arun Ramamurthy, co-founder, Staywell.health.

A plan may cover one person or several family members, subject to its eligibility rules and any age limits. Sarita Joshi, head of life & health insurance, Probus, says: “A firecracker accident can happen in seconds, but the medical expenses that follow can be quite high. This cover helps take care of the medical expenses for burns and other injuries.”

Check The Limits And Exclusions

Read the policy wording before buying. Check the sum insured, any sub-limits on hospital expenses, the start and end dates, and whether a waiting period applies. The policy’s definition of a covered accident and any restrictions on where or how fireworks are used can also affect a claim.

“Consumers should research key features of their short-term accident insurance policy before buying the plan, including the sum insured, sub-limits on hospitalisation expenses, the policy’s effective and expiry dates, any applicable waiting periods, and the definition of an accident covered under the policy,” says Joshi.

Exclusions may apply to incidents involving intoxication, intentional or unlawful acts, or pre-existing medical conditions, depending on the policy. Some plans may not cover outpatient treatment or every burn-related expense. Buyers should check whether third-party injuries are included rather than assuming the policy will pay for them.

“You need to check the total payout limit, the exclusions, and the deadline for informing the company after an accident. Pay close attention to the rules on how the fireworks are used,” says Joshi.

For a claim, the insurer may ask for the claim form, policy and identity details, bank verification, prescriptions, treatment records and hospital bills. A death claim may require a death certificate and police investigation reports. Keep original bills and prescriptions, notify the insurer within the stated time, and retain copies of submitted documents. Keep the bills, prescriptions, and any records of the accident. The insurer may ask for these when you file a claim.

How It Differs From Your Other Policies

A regular health policy can help pay hospital bills for illness or injury at any time of year. Personal accident cover pays a set benefit if an accident causes death or disability. Both have limits and exclusions, so check what your policies already cover before buying another one.

A short-term firecracker policy is designed for specified mishaps during a defined period. It may supplement existing insurance if the policies’ terms allow, but holding more than one policy does not mean a person can claim duplicate reimbursement for the same medical expenses. Reimbursement is generally limited to eligible costs and policy limits; fixed benefits are paid when a specified event occurs, subject to the wording.

“The main difference lies in the scope and extent of coverage. A short-term firecracker policy may offer a limited range of accident-related benefits, whereas a health insurance policy can provide coverage throughout the year for a wider variety of medical needs,” says Ramamurthy.

Before buying, compare the short-term cover with existing health and personal accident policies. Check the benefit limits, exclusions, coverage dates, and claim process to see whether it fills a gap. It should be treated as supplementary protection, not as a substitute for comprehensive health insurance or long-term personal accident cover.
