A phone bought during Diwali or the ongoing festive season may come with an offer to add a protection plan at checkout. The extra charge can look modest beside the price of the device. But before accepting it, buyers need to know whether the plan covers a mishap they could otherwise have to pay for themselves.

Start With The Warranty

A manufacturer’s warranty usually deals with faults in the product. Dropping a phone or spilling liquid on it is a different matter. A protection plan may cover such incidents, but its name alone does not tell the buyer what it promises.

“A manufacturer’s warranty is generally meant for faults that originate in the product, such as a part failing within the warranty period. A protection plan serves a different purpose,” says Abhishek Bansal, CEO, insurance business, InsuranceDekho.

Check whether the offer is an insurance policy, an extended warranty, or a service arrangement. The distinction matters when something goes wrong: the document should identify who will handle the claim, what damage qualifies, and how the buyer must report it.

There is also little reason to pay twice for the same protection. Compare the plan with the warranty already included with the phone or appliance. If the additional plan mainly extends cover for product faults, consider whether that extension is worth its price. If accidental damage is the reason for buying it, confirm that the particular accident you are worried about is covered.

Work Out The Cost Of A Claim

The checkout price is only one part of the calculation. A buyer may have to pay a deductible or copayment when claiming. Depreciation or a limit on the claim could leave another portion of a repair or replacement bill to be paid out of pocket.

“The premium does not always represent the buyer’s full cost. When a claim is made, the customer may still have to absorb a deductible, depreciation, a copayment, or any amount that exceeds the applicable claim limit,” says Bansal.

Ask what happens if the item cannot be repaired. The plan might provide a replacement, pay for repairs, or settle only the depreciated value. Those outcomes are quite different for a buyer expecting the cost of a new device.

Read the exclusions with the same care as the list of covered incidents. Routine wear, cosmetic damage, pre-existing damage, unauthorised repairs and deliberate damage may fall outside the plan. Do not assume theft, loss or accessories are included unless the contract says so.

Finally, weigh the total plan price and possible claim payment against the gadget’s cost and the repair bill you could manage without cover. A plan earns its place in the Puja shopping bill when its terms address a risk that matters to you at a cost you understand.
