Routine Care Is Usually Out Of Pocket

“Most dental expenditure in India tends to be out of pocket, as conventional health insurance schemes typically do not cover many forms of dental treatment, including basic treatment such as cleaning, fillings, as well as cosmetic procedures,” says Arun Ramamurthy, co-founder, Staywell.Health.

Standard health plans generally treat routine dental visits as outpatient department (OPD) care. Such visits do not involve a hospital stay, and may fall outside the policy’s core hospitalisation cover. Some policies offer dental benefits through an OPD rider or as a feature in a broader plan, but these benefits can have a specific list of covered procedures and a maximum claim amount.

“Most standard health insurance plans in India won't pay for everyday dental procedures like fillings, routine cleanings, or scaling. Insurers classify these treatments as outpatient visits that don't require an actual hospital stay,” says Sarita Joshi, head of life & health insurance, Probus.

A standalone policy devoted only to dental care is rare in India. Dental cover is more often bundled with a comprehensive health policy or offered as an add-on. Even where routine treatment is covered, policyholders should check annual limits, per-tooth caps, co-payments, exclusions, and waiting periods. Coverage for one procedure does not mean another will also be paid: root canals, crowns, implants, and cosmetic work may each be treated differently.

Compare The Benefit With The Likely Bill

A dental plan may make sense for someone who expects regular treatment, but the premium alone does not show its value. Compare the amount payable for the procedures you are likely to need with the premium, waiting period, and any share of the bill you must bear. If visits are occasional, paying out of pocket may cost less overall.

“If you only visit the dentist once in a blue moon, paying cash out of pocket is usually cheaper. But if you know you need regular, heavy dental work, it pays to sit down and compare the total costs first,” says Joshi.

Treatment following an accident may be considered under a health policy if it is medically necessary and the policy allows it. A broken jaw or serious facial injury requiring surgery may be assessed differently from a routine filling or implant. But treatment in a hospital does not, by itself, guarantee claim approval.

“Dental expenses can only be covered when treatment is needed due to an injury sustained in an accident, or is included in an eligible hospitalization, in accordance with the specific provisions of the health insurance policy,” says Ramamurthy.

Before treatment, ask the insurer whether the planned procedure and diagnostics are covered, whether pre-authorisation is required, and what limits or exclusions apply. Seek written confirmation where possible. Keep the prescription, diagnostic reports, receipts, and records that explain how an injury occurred and why the treatment was needed. These documents can help the insurer assess the claim, though the policy wording will determine the final decision.
