Four-Year Helicopter Claim Dispute: Chhattisgarh Blacklists Oriental Insurance

An insurance claim filed after a helicopter crash in May 2022 has led to a three-year business ban for Oriental Insurance in Chhattisgarh. The state government acted after the insurer rejected the claim in August 2026, following a wait of more than four years.

From Helicopter Crash To Claim Rejection

The government-owned helicopter crashed at Raipur’s Swami Vivekananda Airport on May 12, 2022, during a night practice sortie. Two pilots died in the accident, according to a PTI report.

The helicopter was insured with The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd (OICL), and the state government said it had paid the premium in full. A claim was submitted after the crash.

The government’s account is that the claim then remained pending for more than four years before the insurer turned it down in August 2026.

“Officials said the delay had financial implications for the state, given that the helicopter had been purchased and insured using taxpayers’ money,” according to a Fortune India report.

The reports do not disclose the specific policy clause or grounds on which Oriental Insurance rejected the claim. They therefore do not establish whether the loss was payable under the contract. Premium payment confirms that insurance was purchased; whether a particular claim is covered depends on the policy terms and the circumstances of the loss.

Why The State Barred The Insurer

Before blacklisting Oriental Insurance, the Directorate of Aviation issued a show-cause notice and sought its written response. The insurer was also given an opportunity for a personal hearing.

The state said the directorate examined the records and the company’s response before passing a reasoned order. Oriental Insurance has consequently been barred from doing business with the state government for three years.

That action concerns its dealings with the government. It should not be read as a nationwide prohibition on the insurer’s operations.

The blacklisting also does not settle the claim. Chhattisgarh has said it will continue pursuing recovery through the administrative and legal remedies available to it. The amount recoverable, if any, remains a separate question.

Fortune India said Oriental Insurance had not responded to its request for details when the report was published.

Policyholders can take an unresolved grievance to the insurer’s grievance redressal officer. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s (Irdai) Bima Bharosa system also allows complaints to be registered and tracked.

A complaint, however, is not an assurance of payment. Its purpose is to seek a response and resolution. The helicopter dispute shows why both the claim decision and the time taken to communicate it deserve scrutiny.
