Independence Day is a time to celebrate freedom, but it can also be a reminder to build a life where your family feels financially secure. While creating wealth takes years, savings can be immediately impacted by an unexpected medical emergency, accident or loss of income. For families looking to strengthen their financial protection, the first step is to check the types of risks they may need to cover.

Abhishek Kumar, a SEBI RIA and founder of SahajMoney, recommends term life, health, critical illness and personal accident covers to help families protect themselves against major financial risks.

Which Insurance Coverage Should Families Consider

“Every family should start with pure term life insurance for all earning members to secure their financial goals in their absence. This should be followed by a comprehensive family floater health policy, a super top-up health plan, and critical illness and personal accident covers to provide wider financial protection,” Kumar said.

Life Insurance

Term life insurance provides a death benefit to the nominee if the insured person dies during the policy term. The policy offers coverage for a fixed period, with the sum insured and duration depending on the plan. For families, the cover is linked to the financial responsibilities of the insured person.

Health Insurance

Health insurance covers eligible medical and hospitalisation expenses, subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of the policy. A family floater health insurance policy allows multiple family members to be covered under a single sum insured.

For families looking for additional health coverage, a super top-up health insurance policy provides an extra layer of cover after eligible medical expenses cross a specified deductible. The deductible can be linked to the family’s existing base health insurance policy.

Critical illness insurance works differently from regular health insurance. It provides a specified payout when the policyholder is diagnosed with a critical illness covered under the policy. The illnesses covered and payout conditions depend on policies.

Personal Accident Insurance

Beyond illness and hospitalisation, accidents can also create financial pressure. Personal accident insurance covers specified consequences arising from an accident, which can include accidental death or disability, depending on the policy. The benefits and payout conditions vary according to the plan selected.

What Should Families Check Before Buying Insurance

Buying an insurance policy is not only about choosing a sum insured. Families also need to understand the conditions attached to the cover, which include what the policy pays for, what it excludes and whether any limits could affect the amount received during a claim.

These details can make a difference when a policy is actually used.

Abhishek advised, “In case of health or critical illness policies, one should thoroughly check for room rent limits, co-payment, restore benefits and specific caps on certain medical procedures. They should also check for waiting periods related to pre-existing conditions and permanent policy exclusions.”

He added that families should check the nominee's name in their life insurance policies and ensure full disclosure of previous or existing health conditions.

Insurance cannot prevent unexpected events, but it can reduce the financial impact they may have on a family. Reviewing insurance covers from time to time is also important as income, family responsibilities and financial needs change. Along with savings and investments, adequate insurance can help protect the financial foundation a family has built.
