Missed Your Health Insurance Renewal? Know What The Grace Period Protects

A missed renewal need not erase benefits already built up. Paying within the grace period may preserve continuity, but may not cover treatment during the unpaid gap

A health policy renewal date can slip by because of a missed reminder or payment failure. The grace period lets policyholders pay without losing continuity benefits, but it does not always provide insurance cover during those days.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s (Irdai) 2024 health insurance master circular sets a 15-day grace period for monthly payments and 30 days for quarterly, half-yearly, and annual payments. It begins after the premium due date. If an annual renewal is due on October 10, the 30-day period generally runs until November 9. A monthly payer has 15 days after the instalment due date. The due date itself is not the first day of the grace period. Check your policy schedule for the exact deadline.

What The Grace Period Preserves

Payment within the period protects continuity credits, including waiting periods already served, pre-existing disease credits, the moratorium period, and no-claim bonus. For these benefits, renewal within the grace period counts as continuous cover. This matters if you have spent years completing a waiting period or building a bonus.

“These are two separate questions, and people often mix them up. Paying inside the grace period protects what you've built up. Waiting periods already served, pre-existing disease credits, the moratorium count & the no-claim bonus all carry forward as if there had been no break,” says Sarita Joshi, head of life & health insurance, Probus.

Continuity credits and cover during the gap are different. Irdai says coverage need not be available for a period for which no premium has been received. So, a hospitalisation during the unpaid gap after an annual policy expires may not be covered, even if you renew before the grace period ends. Check the policy terms.

The rule differs when premiums are paid in instalments during the policy period. Irdai requires insurers to offer cover during the grace period in that situation. If a claim arises, the insurer may recover unpaid instalments from the claim amount under the policy. Confirm this with your insurer; do not assume every grace period offers cover.

“For a standard annual renewal, most insurers treat the gap as uncovered. If you're admitted on day 12 and renew on day 20, that claim is generally not payable, even though your continuity stays intact,” says Joshi.

What If You Miss The Deadline?

If payment is not made by the end of the grace period, the policy can terminate under its terms. Contact the insurer promptly to ask whether it will accept a late renewal or reinstate the policy, and on what conditions. Paying the old premium does not automatically restore cover.

If continuity cannot be restored, you may need a new policy. Fresh waiting periods, including those for pre-existing diseases, can apply. Treatment of accumulated credits and the moratorium period depends on the circumstances and applicable rules. Ask the insurer for its decision in writing before replacing a policy under which you have built up years of cover.

Set a reminder before renewal, check that the premium has been received, and pay within the grace period if you miss the due date. If that period has passed, contact the insurer before relying on the policy or buying another one.
