Next, it is vital to ensure the sum insured, room-rent limits, co-payments, exclusions, waiting periods, and covered treatments are all verified. In case there are any ongoing health concerns of an employee or an employee's dependant, it should be ensured that the condition will be covered.

"Lastly, when moving to another city, it is important to verify the hospital network of insurers. Employees must ensure whether the hospital wants to offer cashless treatment in the new location and whether process of an employee's pre-authorisation, reimbursement claims and emergency procedures will be verified," adds Ramamurthy.

Do Not Depend Entirely On Employer Cover

Changing jobs can temporarily interrupt workplace insurance or replace a generous plan with a leaner one. Employees should compare the old and new schemes on the sum insured, eligible dependants, room-rent restrictions, exclusions, maternity benefits, and any option to enhance the cover.

Parents covered by the previous employer may not be included automatically under the new company’s plan. Even when eligible, enrolment may have to be completed within a limited window. Missing it could leave them without cover until the next renewal.

An employer’s life cover also needs scrutiny. A higher salary, home loan, marriage, birth of a child, or responsibility towards parents can increase the protection required. Company-provided life insurance is best viewed as supplementary because it is tied to employment and may end with the job.

A personal health policy provides continuity between jobs and remains with the policyholder through future career changes. If the base cover appears inadequate, a super top-up may offer an economical way to increase protection, subject to its deductible and other conditions.
