Make Sure Everyone Knows About Important Documents

One of the most uncomfortable subjects families avoid is what happens to their money and assets if something happens to them.

Bank accounts, fixed deposits, mutual funds, shares, insurance policies and property documents should be properly organised. Nominees should be updated, and family members should know where important papers are kept.

A nominee and a legal heir are not necessarily the same. A nominee is the one who can claim the property from that particular institution. But the property may or may not belong to him. As per laws of succession and other rules, the property may be transferred to some other person. Families, therefore, should not assume that adding a nominee settles every ownership issue.

Preparing a will is particularly important when there are several assets or multiple legal heirs. It allows a person to spell out how the property and investments should be distributed. The document should also be revisited when there are major changes in the family or its assets.

There is no need to share banking passwords or PINs with family members. What matters is that someone trusted knows where the relevant papers are kept, which institutions to approach and whom to contact in an emergency.

Spend On Diwali, But Don't Compromise Future Goals

Diwali shopping can easily stretch the household budget. A new television, jewellery, gifts and home improvements may each seem like a manageable expense, but together they can add up to a substantial amount. Decide on a spending limit before the shopping begins, rather than figuring out the damage when the credit card bill arrives.

Buying gold during Diwali is a long-standing tradition in many households. But it is worth asking how much gold the family already owns and whether another purchase makes sense. A festive purchase should not mean withdrawing money meant for a child's education, retirement or an emergency.

The idea is not to make Diwali less enjoyable by turning every purchase into a financial calculation. It is to ensure that festive spending does not create financial stress in the months that follow.

Ultimately, the most useful Diwali money conversation is not about comparing incomes, investments or wealth. It is about making sure that everyone understands the family's financial position and knows what needs attention.
