The scale of this contribution is considerable. As of 31 March 2025, life insurers in India managed total funds of Rs 67.79 lakh crore, comprising Rs 59.50 lakh crore in traditional products and Rs 8.28 lakh crore in unit-linked products, according to IRDAI’s Annual Report 2024-25. The industry’s total premium income stood at Rs 8.86 lakh crore in 2024-25, growing 6.73 per cent, with renewal premiums contributing 55.09 per cent of total premium. More recent industry data indicate that life insurers’ new business premiums rose 15.7 per cent in FY 2025-26 to about Rs 4.6 lakh crore. Together, these numbers point to a sector steadily mobilising household savings at a scale and tenor that few other financial institutions can match.
