Six months of expenses may be enough for some, but others may need a bigger cushion. Your emergency fund should reflect how secure your income is, how many people depend on you and how long it could take to find another job.
Work out how much your family needs to get by, not how much it spends every month. EMIs, school fees, groceries and medical costs must be covered, even when holidays and eating out take a back seat.
Keep your emergency money within easy reach and revisit the amount from time to time. A new loan, a child going to college or rising medical expenses could mean you need to save more.
