PRAGATI Review Meeting: PM Modi Pulls Up States On RERA Functioning, Demands Accountability and Transparency

At the latest PRAGATI review meeting held on Wednesday, May 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a mirror to the functioning of Real Estate Regulatory Authorities (RERAs), questioning their effectiveness in resolving homebuyers’ grievances and pushing for greater accountability from state officials, as per an official statement.

During the meeting, PM Modi reviewed three significant infrastructure projects with an overall cost of over Rs 62,000 crore, spread across various States and Union Territories. Additionally, the PM also called for collective efforts to tackle implementation bottlenecks and make sure they are completed on time, the official statement added.

The official statement added that up to the present PRAGATI meetings, 373 projects with a total cost of around Rs 20.64 lakh crore have been reviewed. 

PM Modi also talked about how these delays and setbacks can inflate costs as well as deprive homebuyers of crucial services and infrastructure. He also asked all stakeholders to make efficiency, accountability and timely delivery their top priority to increase socio-economic outcomes, the press statement read.

Modi stressed the need for timely and quality resolution of real estate grievances, stating, “Strict compliance with RERA provisions is critical for restoring trust in the housing market.”

The Prime Minister also raised concerns over the under-registration of real estate projects with RERA, which is mandatory under the law. Using Uttar Pradesh as an example, he compared its low registration numbers with Maharashtra’s and asked state officials to cross-check builder websites to verify compliance.

The PMO confirmed that Modi instructed states to ensure that all qualifying projects are registered under RERA to maintain transparency and consumer protection.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister asked top bureaucrats if they had ever assessed whether homebuyers were actually satisfied with how their complaints were handled, not just whether they were marked as “disposed of.” Modi emphasised that simply counting resolved cases without verifying outcomes was inadequate, as per a report by TOI.
