UPS Deadline: Last Date To Opt For Unified Pension Scheme Extended

In a major relief for thousands of government employees and retirees, the Centre has extended the deadline to opt into the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) by three months, according to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release. The scheme is open to three categories: existing government employees, those who have already retired, and the legally wedded spouses of deceased past retirees.

The deadline to opt into the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) has now been extended to September 30, 2025, offering eligible individuals three more months beyond the original June 30 cut-off.

The government’s decision follows a steady stream of appeals from serving employees, retired personnel, and spouses of deceased retirees. Many had flagged genuine hurdles, ranging from incomplete paperwork to confusion about who qualifies and delays in getting official responses from departments.

The scheme was officially announced by the Ministry of Finance on January 24, 2025. It is part of a broader initiative to simplify pension benefits for central government employees.

The  Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) issued operational guidelines on March 19, 2025 has issued operational guidelines on March 19, 2025, which mentioned how UPS would function. In the beginning, there was a three-month window provided for those eligible to opt into the scheme.

But given the volume of requests and the challenges involved in completing the formalities, the government has now allowed an additional three months.

Sources in the finance ministry say the extension is meant to ensure that no eligible beneficiary is left out due to technical or logistical hurdles. In many cases, family members of deceased employees are struggling to gather required documents or confirm the deceased's service details in time.

The UPS is part of a broader government effort to rationalise pension schemes and move toward a more streamlined system of retirement benefits.

With the extended deadline in place, eligible individuals will get an opportunity to assess the scheme and do the necessary formalities. It is expected that many will come forward and opt in now.
