Neglecting Elderly Parents? Beware! It May Cost You 10-15% Salary Deduction In Telangana

The Telangana Government plans to bring in a unique measure to ensure the elderly remain well taken care of in today’s society. The Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, on Monday (January 12, 2026) said that if children neglect their elderly parents, they may lose 10-15 per cent of their salary. The government plans to introduce a law regarding this in the upcoming budget session, per media reports. If government employees do not take care of their parents, a part of their salary will be deducted and paid directly to their parents’ bank accounts.      

Reddy said this at an event where he inaugurated day care centres for the elderly. He said, "We can say that those who are not taking care of their parents are not fulfilling their responsibility towards society.”

As the elderly population is growing in India and is expected to double by the middle of this century, it is necessary to pay attention to senior citizens’ requirements. Different state governments are taking different measures to address issues seniors face. These include financial dependency, physical mobility, nuclear families, social isolation, loneliness, and health issues, to name a few.

Per the Telangana government website, “The government is taking steps to support the elderly. Many parents, despite their sacrifices, are neglected by their children in old age. For the first time in the country, Telangana is acting as the 'head of the family’ for elderly welfare through the Pranaam program. A proposal has been made to amend the law so that if a government employee neglects their parents, 10–15 per cent of their salary could be deposited into the parents’ accounts.”

In Telangana, the senior citizens' day-care centres are set up under the ‘Pranaam’ programme to support senior citizens in living their lives with dignity.  

Besides these, the state government also plans to introduce a health insurance scheme for senior citizens so that they can receive the treatment when they need it. Considering healthcare a crucial aspect of old age, the chief minister also said that the government plans to provide a health insurance policy for senior citizens’ medical treatment, and it may announce it in the budget session.
