Sivasubramanian Ramann assumes charge as the new chairperson of the Pension Fund Regulatory And Development Authority (PFRDA) from today, April 20, 2025. The government announced his appointment on April 8, 2025, and now he assumed the charge. Ramann is succeeding Deepak Mohanty whose tenure ended in May 2025. PFRDA is the regulatory body of the pension system in India, liable for managing pensions, including the National Pension System (NPS) and the Unified Pension System (UPS) which was implemented on April 1, 2025, and monitoring the stakeholders such as pension fund managers, and the central record keeping agencies(CRAs), point of presence (PoPs) among others.

Who Is Sivasubramanian Ramann?

Ramann is an Indian Audit & Accounts Service (IA&AS) officer from the 1991 batch. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Delhi. He also has an M.Sc. in Financial Regulations from the London School of Economics and Political Science and an LLB. Over his long service period, he has obtained several certifications, including a Certified Internal Auditor credential from the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Florida, a Chief Digital Officer certification from the Indian School of Business, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Securities Law.

Before joining PFRDA, he worked at the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India as Deputy Comptroller & Auditor General and Chief Technology Officer. He has assumed several leadership positions in the financial regulatory landscape. The positions and in his previous assignments include chairman and managing director of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), chief general manager (CGM), and then executive director at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), managing director and chief executive officer of National E-Governance Services Ltd (NeSL), and Jharkhand state’s Principal Accountant General.

How Is The PFRDA Chairperson Appointed?

The Central government appoints the PFRDA chairperson based on the recommendation of the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC). However, FSRASC can also identify and recommend any other person for the role, based on merit, who has not applied for it.

A Few Key Points:

• The chairperson is appointed for a five-year term

• The retirement age for a chairperson is 65 years

• The salary entitlement is Rs 4.5 lakh per month

He is an experienced professional in finance with strong experience in financial regulations, public finance, and technology.
