If a person’s Permanent Account Number (PAN) is not linked with the Aadhaar number by December 31, 2025, it will become inactive. This applies to those who have been allotted a PAN based on their Aadhaar Enrolment ID filed before October 1, 2024. Per the Central Board Of Direct Taxes notification dated April 3, 2025, “every person who has been allotted permanent account number on the basis of Enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form filed prior to the 1st day of October, 2024, shall intimate his Aadhaar number to the Principal Director General of Income-tax (Systems) or Director General of Income-tax (Systems) or the person authorised by the said authorities on or before the 31st day of December, 2025 or such date as may be specified by the Central Board of Direct Taxes in this behalf.”

Linking PAN with Aadhaar is a simple process. One can do it on the income tax e-filing portal, even without logging in. To know the process, read here.

When Can PAN Become Inoperative?

However, failing to do so by the stipulated date would render PAN inoperative. A PAN is an important personal document required for several financial verifications, such as the purchase of mutual funds, property, and tax filing. Therefore, it is advisable to keep it active. The troubles an inoperative PAN can create include no refund of income tax if any, no interest payment on such refund if any from the date it became inoperative, penalty on quoting an inoperative PAN in the income-tax return, and a higher TDS - tax-deducted at source under the provisions of Section 206AA and higher TCS - tax collected at source under Section 206CC.

So, to avoid it all, link PAN and Aadhaar by the due date of December 31, 2025.

However, if one is not sure whether it is already linked or not, one can easily check the link status on the e-filing portal.
