Income Tax Online Payment: Know The Payment Modes Available Under e-Pay Tax

As tax-related processes continue to move online, taxpayers now have multiple digital options to complete their payments. The Income Tax Department’s (ITD) e-Pay Tax facility enables taxpayers to make direct tax payments electronically through different modes available on the e-filing portal.

What Is e-Pay Tax

The ITD’s e-Pay Tax facility available on the e-filing portal provides taxpayers with a unified platform to make direct tax payments online. The service allows users to complete tax payments electronically through different payment modes available on the portal.

The payment modes under the e-Pay Tax facility remain unchanged whether the payment is related to the Income-tax Act, 1961 or the Income-tax Act, 2025. Taxpayers can use the facility for various payments, including advance tax, self-assessment tax, demand payments and other applicable fees or levies. The e-Pay Tax service allows taxpayers to generate challans, make direct tax payments and access payment history through the Income Tax e-Filing portal.

Banks Available For e-Pay Tax Payments

At present, 33 authorised banks are available for making direct tax payments through the e-Pay Tax service on the official ITD portal. Some of the major banks available on the platform include State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank (PNB), Canara Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Taxpayers can select their bank from the available list while completing the payment process. If a taxpayer’s bank is not included in the authorised bank list, they can still make the payment using alternative options such as NEFT/RTGS or the payment gateway facility available on the portal.

How Can Taxpayers Pay Through e-Pay Tax

To begin the process, users need to access the e-Pay Tax section and select the New Payment option. They can then choose the applicable tax category, assessment year, and provide the required tax details. The facility provides five payment options based on the taxpayer’s preference.

Net Banking

Taxpayers can make direct tax payments through the net banking facility of authorised banks available under the e-Pay Tax service. After selecting the bank, taxpayers are redirected to the bank’s internet banking platform to complete the transaction.

Debit Card

Taxpayers can pay their tax dues using debit cards issued by participating banks. After choosing the debit card option, users need to mention their card details and complete the required verification process to complete the payment.

Pay At Bank Counter (OTC)

Taxpayers who choose offline payment can use the Pay at Bank Counter option. They can generate a challan through the e-Pay Tax portal and visit an authorised bank branch to make payment through cash, cheque or demand draft. Cash payments above Rs 10,000 are not permitted under this mode.

RTGS/NEFT

Taxpayers can make tax payments through Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) or National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) after generating the mandate form on the e-Pay Tax portal. The payment can be made by following the instructions mentioned in the mandate form.

Payment Gateway

The payment gateway option allows taxpayers to pay taxes by using online payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, UPI and net banking. Users can select their preferred option to make the transaction.
