Bank holidays are something that keeps work-related chores stuck if one does not plan their leaves properly. Banks across India will be observing several holidays in April 2026, which are influenced by a mix of national occasions, regional festivities and scheduled leaves. Since bank holidays vary across states and occasions, customers should always check and stay informed about their financial activities that need attention.
The month begins with an important operational closure on April 01,2026. This is when the banks will remain shut for the annual closing of all accounts. This is a routine year-end procedure that banks follow across multiple states.
Shortly after, April 03, 2026, is seen as Good Friday. This is a widely observed Christian holiday which commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On this day, banks will remain closed in the regions that hold a significant population of Christians, such as Kerala, Goa, and other parts of the Northeast.
Followed by the second Saturday of the month on April 11, this is also when the banks will be shut nationwide. As per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) guidelines, all banks across the country will remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, as well as all Sundays.
Aside from the RBI declared holidays in April, one of the most prominent holidays of the month is on April 14, which is observed as Dr B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti. The day celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. It is seen as a public holiday in several states, which leads to bank closures being observed across the country. This day also witnessed festivals like Tamil New Year, Bohag Bihu, and Vishu. These festivals are celebrated in different parts of India, which results in banks being closed as per the local observations.
The next day, April 15, is seen as the Bengali New Year (Poila Baisakh), these observances are not celebrated nationwide but can affect the banking operations in the regions they are in.
Further into the month, April 20 is observed as Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritya, and April 21 marks Garia Puja in Tripura. These are regional holidays hence the bank closures will be limited to these specific areas.
The bank holidays conclude with the fourth Saturday on April 25, when banks across the country will again be closed as part of the weekend schedule as per the RBI guidelines.
