Banks across the country will be closed on several days between January 19 and January 25 due to regional holidays and the weekly closures. Customers are advised to note the dates and plan their branch-specific banking operations accordingly.
The list of holidays is a part of the annual calendar published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The holidays are applicable to all scheduled banks, including public sector banks, private banks, cooperative banks, and regional rural banks.
This week will see bank holidays for the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Saraswati Puja, and Basanta Panchami in some states, along with the designated weekly holidays for the second Saturday and Sunday of the week.
Banks will remain closed on January 23, Friday, in West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura for the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Saraswati Puja or Shree Panchami, Vir Surendrasai Jayanti, and Basanta Panchami, depending on the state.
January 24 is the second Saturday of the month, which is a mandatory bank holiday in India. January 25 is a Sunday, which is also a weekly holiday for banks. Therefore, banks in some states will be closed for three consecutive days from Friday to Sunday.
There are 16 bank holidays in January 2026, including Sundays, and second and fourth Saturdays. Apart from the weekly holidays, banks are also closed on various state-specific and national holidays in the month.
Banks were closed on January 1 in various states due to New Year's Day and festivals. Banks were closed on January 2 in Kerala and Mizoram, while January 3 was a holiday in Uttar Pradesh. January 12 was a bank holiday in West Bengal for the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
The mid-month holidays include Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and other local festivals in various states between January 14 and January 17. Republic Day on January 26 is a bank holiday throughout all states and Union Territories.
Customers should be aware that bank holidays differ from state to state, depending on local festivals and holidays. It is better to check with the local bank branch for the specific holiday schedule.
Even during the closure of bank branches, most online services remain operational. Customers can access internet banking and mobile banking applications for fund transfer, bill payment, and account services.
The services offered by the ATM include cash withdrawal, which is available in most cases, depending on the availability of cash in the ATMs. Transactions through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) are also not hindered due to any bank holiday. However, transactions that involve cheques, promissory notes, and other negotiable instruments will not be processed on bank holidays.
