Banks will remain closed on multiple days in May 2026, according to the holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The holidays will include weekends, national and state festivals. The bank holiday list will differ from one state to another.
All banks will be closed on all Sundays, and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Sundays in May 2026 will fall on May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; the second and fourth Saturdays are May 9 and May 23. Banks will be closed on these days in all states and Union Territories throughout the country.
May 1 will be observed as a bank holiday in many states for various reasons. It will be celebrated as Labour Day in some states. Banks in Maharashtra and Gujarat will be closed on the same day for Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day, respectively. In many states, May 1 will be celebrated as Buddha Purnima, resulting in bank holidays.
Other than May 1, banks will be closed in several states for local holidays. West Bengal will celebrate Rabindra Jayanti (birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore) on May 9 (second Saturday). Later in the month, on May 26, Nazrul Jayanti (birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam), will be celebrated in West Bengal and Tripura, resulting in bank holidays in these states.
Eid al Adha (Bakrid), which is expected to be observed towards the end of May, will likely fall on either May 27 or 28, depending on the sighting of the moon. Most states are likely to observe bank holidays on this day.
Even though banks will be closed on the gazetted holidays, digital banking services such as Netbanking and mobile banking, and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will be available. ATMs will also operate as usual.
Cheque clearing and branch transactions will not take place on holidays, which could lead to delayed settlements. Payments scheduled on holidays are usually processed on the next business day, which may affect transaction timelines for customers and merchants.
Given the multiple holidays in May customers should check the state-wise holiday list to plan their bank branch-related activities in advance.
