Chhath Puja 2025 Bank Holiday: Are Banks Closed On October 27 And 28?

After the conclusion of Diwali celebrations, preparation for the holy festival of Chhath Puja has started. The festival, dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya, is celebrated across Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

This year, Chhath Puja falls on October 27, 2025, and the morning Arghya is on October 28. Banks in certain states will remain closed to observe the festival, which will affect routine in-person banking services.

Many bank customers are unsure whether banks will be open or closed during this period. Planning ahead is important to avoid last-minute issues with financial transactions during the holidays.

State-Wise Bank Holidays On Chhath Puja

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday list shows that banks in Bihar and Jharkhand will not operate on October 27 and 28 due to Chhath Puja. Banks in West Bengal will remain closed only on October 27.

These holidays are state-specific. Banks in other parts of India will operate normally unless regional RBI offices issue separate announcements.

In Delhi, CM Rekha Gupta announced October 27 as a government holiday for Chhath, however, banks in the national capital will operate as usual.

Upcoming Bank Holidays In October

Apart from Chhath Puja, banks in Gujarat will remain closed on October 31 on account of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. According to RBI guidelines, both scheduled and non-scheduled banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, as well as on all Sundays.

Impact On Banking Services

In-person banking services will be limited during Chhath Puja, but digital channels will remain functional. Customers can use online banking, mobile apps, ATMs, and UPI for transfers, bill payments, and balance inquiries. Services like large cash deposits, cheque clearances, and demand drafts will not be available. People in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal should plan important banking transactions before or after the festival to avoid delays.
