The State Bank of India (SBI), the largest lender in the country, has announced changes in customer transaction charges that will impact the use of ATM and the immediate payment service (IMPS) money transfer. The updated IMPS charges would take effect from February 15, 2026; ATM transaction charges were already revised previously. These changes will be implemented primarily for the customers who often use other banks' ATM or those who transfer significant amounts using digital channels.

Changes in IMPS Charges

IMPS transfers up to Rs 25,000 done digitally will remain free of charge. The channels for free-of-charge IMPS transactions include internet banking, mobile banking and the SBI YONO app. Small-value transfers done by the customers using these channels will not be changed.

But transfers of over Rs 25,000 will now levy service charges. On transfers between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1 lakh, SBI will charge Rs 2 plus GST. The charges between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh will be charged at Rs 6 plus GST. Transfer amounts between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, a fee amounting to 10 plus GST will be charged.

Branch IMPS Charges Remain Unchanged

SBI has confirmed that no new charges have been introduced for branch-based IMPS transactions. These range from Rs 2 to Rs 20 plus GST, depending on the amount of transfer.

Accounts Exempted from IMPS Charges

Certain categories of accounts have been exempted from the revised IMPS charges. Customers holding SBI salary accounts and special savings accounts under special schemes will still enjoy free IMPS transfers. These accounts include Defence Salary Package (DSP), Police and Paramilitary Salary Package (PMSP), Indian Coast Guard Salary Package (ICSP), Central Government Salary Package (CGSP), Public Sector Salary Package (PSP), and Railway Salary Package (RSP) accounts. Moreover, the Shaurya Family Pension Account, as well as the SBI Rishtey Family Savings Account, are not subject to it.

Account holders under these categories will not be charged for IMPS transfers, regardless of the transaction value.

Important IMPS Rules Customers Should Know

The amount of IMPS transfers that an individual can make on a daily basis is still fixed at Rs 5 lakh. IMPS is a real-time payment system, and once the transaction has been carried out, it cannot be undone. SBI has recommended that customers check the beneficiary details thoroughly before making a transfer, as once the transaction is made, it is impossible to rectify the mistake.

Already Revised ATM Transaction Charges

Before introducing the IMPS changes, SBI had revised ATM and automated deposit and withdrawal machine transaction charges. This change came into effect on December 1, 2025, and was the second significant revision in ATM charges during the year.

Who Will Pay Higher ATM Charges

Customers holding savings accounts will be charged once they go beyond the free transaction limit in the ATMs of other banks. Once the free limit is exceeded, cash withdrawals will be charged at Rs 23 plus GST per transaction. Non-financial transactions such as balance enquiries will be charged at Rs 11 plus GST.

Salary account holders will also see a change. Previously, these accounts were free to make unlimited ATM transactions. Under the revised rules, salary account holders will now get 10 free ATM transactions per month. Transactions above this will be charged.

There have been no free ATM transactions available for current account holders. A higher fee will now be applied to each ATM transaction in the new fee structure.

Accounts Exempt from ATM Charges

Some accounts are exempt from the new ATM fees. Kisan Credit Card account holders will continue to enjoy free unlimited ATM transactions. Basic Savings Bank Deposit account holders will also see no change in existing rules.

Cardless cash withdrawal is still free in SBI and other banks' ATMs.

Ways Customers can Avoid Extra Charges

SBI has encouraged its customers to use the SBI ATM network of more than 63000 ATMs and automated deposit and withdrawal machines. SBI has retained free access for small digital transactions while introducing charges for higher-value transfers and extensive use of non-SBI ATMs.

Customers who plan transactions carefully and use SBI channels may be able to soften the impact of these changes.
